$14.95

Homer Garland Phillips—His Life and Fight for a Hospital is the first biographical book of Homer Garland Phillips, the black pioneer civil rights attorney in St. Louis. His short life saw him battle racial housing segregation, fight for the expansion of voting rights, and ultimately achieve the founding of a hospital on the north side of St. Louis to serve the black community. Many people know him only because of the hospital name, but few know of the audacious man and the sacrifices he made to give the black community access to the most basic of all rights—the right to be medically treated and healed.

Description

Homer Garland Phillips—His Life and Fight for a Hospital is the first biographical book of Homer Garland Phillips, the black pioneer civil rights attorney in St. Louis. His short life saw him battle racial housing segregation, fight for the expansion of voting rights, and ultimately achieve the founding of a hospital on the north side of St. Louis to serve the black community. His remarkable career would see him encounter famous names such as Scott Joplin, Laurence Dunbar, Henry Kiel, Annie Malone, and fellow black attorney George Vaughn. His uncompromising and courageous struggle against a prejudiced community made him enemies that would ultimately end with his murder, which still inexplicably remains “unsolved”. Many people know him only because of the hospital name, but few know of the audacious man and the sacrifices he made to give the black community access to the most basic of all rights—the right to be medically treated and healed. The story of Homer Garland Phillips is a great American story every St. Louisan should know.
